Van Shaver for Loudon County Mayor - May 2, 2006

.

Qualifications

I have lived in Loudon County all of my life.

I am a 1977 graduate of Lenoir City High School and a graduate of the State Area Vocational School of Knoxville.

Served on the Board of Directors and was part owner of our family corporation for 15 years.  Explanation:

  • I worked for my grandfather then my dad in our three-generation, family owned, whole sale produce business at the Forest Avenue Produce market in Knoxville.

  • Being on the Board of Directors meant that you had to be at work every morning, six days a week by 4:30 a.m. Unloaded truck loads of produce.  Loaded out truck loads of produce. Bought and sold millions of dollars of product every year.  Handled accounts receivable and payable. Managed many employees who weren't always that excited to be at work. That's what being on the Board of Director's for the family business meant.

Retired for nearly one year and took over household duties. Cooked, cleaned, bought groceries, took care of the children - hardest job I ever had!  I quit after only ten months and went back to work.  I won't do that any more!  God bless mothers and housewives.

Worked as Facilities and Materials Coordinator for one of the largest building materials company in Loudon County.  Explanation:  Warehouse supervisor at Wilburn True Value Hardware Center in Lenoir City for four years.   Enjoyed this job very much and learned a lot!

For the last eight years, I have been a Residential Correction Engineer.  Explanation:  I am a handy man!  I do all kinds of jobs all over Loudon County.  I enjoy this work more than anything I have ever done.

I am the Eaton Crossroads Recreation Director.  Explanation:  For the last sixteen years I have been the volunteer commissioner/director of the Eaton Crossroads Ruritan Community Park.  We have a ten member committee that oversees all of the operations of the park.  Our program is the largest youth sports organization in the County with an annual enrollment of about 700 children ages four to seventeen. Anyone that knows me at all, knows that the park figures prominently in my day to day life.  This is one of those jobs that you do for the sheer enjoyment of it!  I am also the past president of the Eaton Crossroads Ruritan Club and the current treasurer for the club.

County Commissioner for Fifth District. For the last three and a half years I have been a member of the Loudon County Commission. I have learned so much about County Government and yet there is still much more to learn. I hope that in my time on Commission I have proven my willingness to represent the residents of the County.
Click here for more about my time on Commission.

As you can see over the last 25 years or so, I have worked in several different jobs and capacities.   I have been an employer and an employee.  I have had a lot of business experience and people experience.   Most of all, I love Loudon County, Tennessee!  As far as I am concerned, the world starts and stops at the County line!

If given the opportunity to serve Loudon County as Mayor, my intent will be to see to it that Loudon County Government is run as properly and efficiently as possible. I  guarantee it.
