Helping Out 2

At last Monday's Lenoir City council meeting, 3/13, more than half of the twenty minute meeting was used to discuss a story on a website about the dirt being removed from the new addition to the Kingston Street Laundromat. To be fair, no one ever called my name but it was pretty obvious what website and who had them in such a tizzy.

Mayor Tony Aikens kicked off the conversation just wanting let council know about an issue. He said people out in social media who operates blogs tell half truths or out and out lies. The mayor, city attorney and a couple of council members spoke on the matter. You really have to watch the video to appreciate it.

There's just one problem, the mayor's timeline is way off. The dirt was moved on Wednesday, the 8th. Aikens says he was informed about the dirt move on Thursday the 9th. I didn't publish the story till Monday, the 13th. So if Aikens and the city administrator were discussing the matter on the 9th, and the city attorney was investigating shortly after, then the story on my website on the 13th had nothing to do with any of it. OOPS.

This meeting went exactly like the one did after I did the story on the late tax bills. In that story, Aikens brought in his finance director to try to make it sound like I had accused her of wrong doing. No truth to that one. In Monday's meeting, Aikens is trying to make it sound like someone was accusing Lenoir City street department superintendent, J.J. Cox, of wrong doing. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I can assure you, I, nor the folks who contacted me about the dirt move, nor the folks who read the story, felt that Lenoir City street department superintendent, J.J. Cox, had done anything nefarious in any way. We all know who the blame was pointing at. I've known Mr. Cox for many years and I can say he's one of the best the city has. A way better man than some of those sitting behind the table.

My original story from last Monday, Helping Out, didn't actually accuse anyone of doing anything wrong. In fact, I even mentioned that cleaning up after contractors might be common practice. According to Aikens, it is.

The very best part of the video is near the end when Aikens said, some of these people on social media are just mean or have mental issues. Either way, he's going to pray for them and turn the other cheek. I kid you not. You've got to watch the video.

Below is a link to the video. The dirt conversation starts ay 4:20 thru 16:07.
