Helping Out

As if there hasn't already been enough controversy at the old Kingston Street Laundry mat...it just keeps coming.

Last Wednesday, I received several contacts of activity happening at the laundry mat. Seems there was at least one city dump truck and a city backhoe on site cleaning up and removing dirt rocks and debris from the construction site of the new addition to the building. I'll be honest, I have no idea if mayor Tony Aikens makes this kind of service available to all construction projects in the city, but I am pretty certain that city personal and equipment didn't just happen to show up there to do the work without someone sending them there.

You will recall, last year, the owners of the laundry mat, Mayor Tony Aikens and Lenoir City Treasurer Jim Wilburn, sold the business to the new owners for $500,000.00. Then just ten days later, at the next city council meeting, mayor Aikens asked the city council to let him give, quit claim, the adjacent lot, owned by the city, to the new owners of the laundry mat. Of course, the council dutifully did what the mayor told them to do.

Just a few months ago, the new owners began an addition to the building on the free city lot the mayor gave them. That's what generated the dirt and debris that was being hauled off last week. The new addition seems to be getting close to completion. Good thing is, they're going to have discount tobacco and ice cold beer. Just what the city needs more of.

I guess if you buy property from the mayor and his associates, you also get free land and maybe even some free labor compliments of the mayor and the city.
