What's In A Name

Last week, officials broke ground on the new fire and police training center in Lenoir City. During the ceremony, and apparently a surprise to everyone, Lenoir City mayor, Tony Aikens, announced the facility would be named for Lenoir City safety director, Don White. Aikens made the decision on his own without consulting with his city council, county officials of Loudon City officials.

Not to say White isn't worthy, it just seems that given that the county donated a million dollars to the project and Loudon City donated 250k to the project, you might have thought Aikens would have at least consulted with the other jurisdictions on the name choice.

Loudon County and Lenoir City have both had officers who have died in the line of duty. Former Loudon County sheriff, Tim Guider, served as sheriff for 32 years, making him the longest serving sheriff in Loudon County history. A name that reflected the joint effort of all governments involved in paying for the facility might have been a good option. We have a number of military veterans from Loudon County, even one Medial of Honor recipient that might have been given consideration. Maybe even allow citizen input on the naming of the facility. Nope, Akins made the decision all by himself.

Now, before the Aikens trolls and family members get cranked up, I'm not saying Mr. White isn't a fine person and worthy of the honor bestowed upon him by Aikens, I'm just pointing out that this is another typical Aikens move where he dictates how something will be without even asking anyone else their opinion.

Just Aikens being Aikens.
