The retail giant removed the beloved East Tennessee product from the shelves last week, citing the company's efforts to provide "every day low prices." "In an effort to keep quality items on our shelves at a great every day low prices, we’re always looking at our assortment," Walmart spokesman Molly Blakeman said. The Walmart decision only applies to milk at this time, according to Blakeman. "Recently, we made a change in our assortment in Tennessee to ensure we could continue to provide customers with the low prices they expect from us. We know Mayfield Dairy plays an important role in Athens and will continue to offer their products in stores in that community." Five stores in the Athens community will continue to sell Mayfield milk and ice cream, she said. Food City pledged its allegiance to the local name with a sponsored ad on Facebook on Monday and Helenwood Food's IGA in Scott County let local residents know they will continue to sell Mayfield products in a Facebook post. Mayfield Dairy was founded in Athens, Tennessee in 1910 and functioned for 80 years before the family business was sold to Dean Foods in 1990. Dean Foods continued to produce and sell Mayfield Dairy products regionally, including milk and ice cream. |
