Total Disaster 18

At last week's Lenoir City planning commission meeting, a representative from DR Horton builders was in attendance to request the rezone of 80 acres on Hwy 321, the former Loudon County school board property. The request was to rezone the property to R-3, which could allow up to 24 units per acre. The developer also submitted a plan for the property that would include, 200 single family homes, 60 apartments and maybe 32-40 townhomes.

Are you ready for this? The planning commission turned the request down. BUT, before you break out the party hats or think something has changed in the city, that's not the case. According to the chairman of the planning commission, Leon Shields, this same property has been before the planning commission three times without ever changing hands. He asked the DR Horton representative if they had actually bought the property, which he stated they had not, but they do have it under contract. DR Horton was instructed to come back with their request when they own the property.

That same property had already been approved for 408 apartments and 124 single family homes a couple of years ago. Just think how that development will impact the local school systems.

They'll be back.

A second item on the agenda was the approval of an additional 12 units at the Emerson Park apartment complex, presented by local builder Tooter Robinett. This is the new apartment complex on Pine Top street at Hickman Street, behind Hardies. This will be in addition to the 31 apartments already on the same site.

The request was approved unanimously.

The jam and cram continues.
