Tax Bills 2024

If you own property in Loudon County, you likely have recently received your 2024 property tax bills. I did and got hit with a nearly $400 increase. And I know why. In June, the majority of commission passed a 16.4%, or 25 cent, property tax increase. The increase was to pay for an estimated $115,000,000.00 in new county school improvements including a new middle/high school on the north end of the county.

The 25 cent increase goes entirely to the county school board. At $1.77, the county tax rate is still one of the lower rates in the state.  This is the first property tax increase in Loudon County since 2011. In fact there was a 4 cent reduction in 2014. The county general fund hasn't had a property tax increase since 2007. Ironically, Lenoir City property owners will not pay the increase since the city has their own school system but the need for the new school is driven by the uncontrolled development in Lenoir City.

Let's be honest, no one wants to pay higher taxes, for sure not me. But the the time comes when the needs require money to plan for the long term future. If the increase was for anything other than education, I couldn't have supported it. But we all owe an obligation to provide the best education we can for the kids. But apparently, not everyone supports Loudon County schools.

Recently, I posted a story about the property tax increase which generated a lot of discussion, as it should. Below is an excerpt from that discussion.

While Ms. Collier, a Tellico Village, lake front resident, seems to claim to speak for all Tellico Village residents, I can assure you she does not. During the tax hike discussion, I heard from many village residents who were very supportive of the school boards building program. No doubt, Ms. Collier does represent a small minority of villagers and others but fortunately, far more people in Loudon County do support education than don't.
