Survey Says 2

Last week, Mike Garren, director of county schools, sent a survey to all North Middle School parents getting their input on a couple of issues. The total number of surveys was 499.

The first question was:

  • 83 Responded YES they would be interested in their child attending Loudon High School

  • 243 Responded NO they would not be interested in their child attending Loudon High School

  • 155 Responded MAYBE they would be interested in their child attending Loudon High School

  • 18 Did not respond

On question 2:

  • 320 Responded YES they would be interested in their child attending the new school

  • 144 Responded NO they would not be interested in their child attending the new school

  • 28 Responded MAYBE they would be interested in their child attending the new school

  • 8 Did not respond

So, it looks like transporting upper end students to Loudon was far less popular than building a new school.

In the current market, rough estimates are that it would require about a twenty-five cent property tax increase to buy land, build a school and staff it. While an option, a new school would be years away.

Loudon County has two high schools now, Greenback and Loudon High Schools. The question to be answered is, are there even enough high school age children in the county to support another high school? This and other questions will have to be answered.
