Sew perfect: Greenback Heritage Museum to host quilt show

Quilted treasures are being sought for display at the 2023 Greenback Heritage Museum Quilt Show, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 7-9 at the museum, 6725 Morganton Road, Greenback. Entries will be accepted from noon to 6p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30; 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at the museum. No entry fee is charged.

The quilt show is a popular way to display prized quilts and other quilted pieces, such as table runners and wall hangings, and entries can be vintage quilts inherited from loved ones as well as newly constructed quilted items. In 2022, more than 60entries were on display. Admission to the quilt show is free.
 

This little piggy

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three entries as determined by the popular “piggy bank votes.” Each quilt is assigned a number, and the public can vote for their favorites by putting money in the appropriate bank. Owner of the quilt with the most “votes” will win $50; second-place winner $35; and third-place winner $20.

Anyone is welcome to submit a quilted piece for display in the quilt show. “Ween courage people to bring their quilts,” said Barbara Davis, museum board member/volunteer and a member of the Quilt Show Committee. “Last year we had62 quilts and we would love to have more this year.” Participants don’t have to live in Greenback to enter a quilt.
 

Raffle

In addition, raffle tickets will be sold for $5 each at the museum, which is open 10a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, or from any museum volunteer either before or during the show. Funds raised will go toward the Hardware Building Restoration Project for the new Greenback Heritage Museum Building.

“There will be three chances to win,” said Museum President Linda Berry, who is also on the Quilt Show Committee. First prize is a turquoise quilt measuring 92 by 92inches; second prize is a colorful iris quilt measuring 66 by 66 inches; and third prize is a brown rose quilt measuring 61 by 61 inches.

The winning tickets will be drawn at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9.

This is the museum’s 12th quilt show. The event is designed as a way to introduce the community to the holdings of the Greenback Heritage Museum, established in 2006in downtown Greenback. Visitors can find documents, books, pictures, farm tools, household items, telephones, antique radios, business equipment and more from the1800s and early 1900s. The Greenback Heritage Scrapbook, a compilation of documents, pictures, newspaper clippings and articles covering the history of the area from around 1800 until recent times, is available. Four local history books are sold at the museum: “A Place Called Greenback” by Edwin Best; “Bussell town” by Henry Molter; “The Greenback I Remember” by Judy Franklin Hudson; and “Last Stand at Fork Creek: A Farm Family Fights to Save Their Land, Community and the Little Tennessee River” by Carolyn Ritchey.
