Saying Stupid Stuff

I've really gotten to enjoy watching the Lenoir City council meetings. You can bet that somebody is going to say some stupid stuff. For instance, mayor Tony Aikens, continues to toot his own horn about the 5% property tax decrease the council passed last year. But he never mentions that he and the council raised the property tax by 17% just three years earlier. so the Lenoir City property owners are paying ten cents more on their property tax than they should be. Aikens calls that a win.

Then in the council meeting two weeks ago, while the council was debating the annexation on Shaw Ferry Road, councilman Eddie Simpson, holding a copy of the plat that showed the property owner planned to build 97 homes, looked at the plat and said, he didn't figure the developer would build more than 35-40 homes. How does someone say something like that.

But at last week's council meeting, Simpson again wins the award for saying stupid stuff. During a discussion of the council, newest council member, Robin McNabb, was simply asking questions and quickly admitted she was new to the council and was just trying to understand the topic. Apparently, McNabb must have asked too many questions for councilman Simpson. Leaning over to speak to City Treasurer, Jim Wilburn, thinking no one would hear him, he said "she's married to Van Shaver". Unfortunately for Simpson, while he had his hand over his face, he spoke into his microphone so everyone got to hear what he said. And good for councilwoman McNabb, she called him out on his petulant statement. It was priceless.

I'll be watching future Lenoir City council meetings just to see who says stupid stuff.
