Sales Tax Hike?
Less than a year after the Lenoir City council passed
the massive Rain Tax on everyone in the city, council may be about to
take a second bite at the tax apple. Council will considering adding a sales tax hike to the November ballot. That would allow the citizens to decide if they want to pay higher taxes. The sales tax hike will supposedly be for school safety. As always, it's for the children. The last time a sales tax increase was on a ballot was in back in 2008, when county commission added a half cent sales tax increase to the ballot. That increase was also stated to be for schools. That measure was defeated by a nearly 70% margin by county voters. Maybe council could offer the schools some of their Rain Tax revenues. Oh wait, the schools have to pay the city thousands of dollars per year for Rain Taxes. Maybe council could exempt the schools from the Rain Tax and they could use the money saved for school safety. The city taxes the schools now the city needs to raise taxes because the schools don't have enough money. My head's spinning. Why is the only answer to every problem in local government, higher taxes? |
