Poor driving leads to Loudon
and Lenoir City men busted for drug charges
After a car reportedly seen
swerving in and out of its lane caught the attention of a Loudon
County deputy, further inspection led to the local duo facing
several charges including possession of meth.
On Wednesday, Feb. 21, Deputy
Brooke Slattery with the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office observed
a black Toyota Avalon traveling westbound on Pond Creek Road
just before Dry Valley Road.
Slattery observed the vehicle driving poorly and saw it
cross the double yellow line before returning back into its
own lane. Slattery then conducted a traffic stop at a local
gas station just a few miles down the road.
Slattery made contact
with the driver, 31-year-old Matthew Underwood of
Lenoir City, and reportedly detected a strong odor
of marijuana coming from his person.
Slattery then asked
if Underwood had his driver’s license to which he
said it was inside the vehicle.
According to the
arrest report, Underwood proceeded to open the
driver-side door at which time Slattery also
detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from
inside the vehicle.
Around this same time
Slattery made contact with the passenger of the
vehicle — 29-year-old Kristopher Pierce of Loudon.
Slattery decided to call for assistance leading to
more deputies arriving on the scene.
A probable cause
search of the vehicle by Deputy Nate Reagan and
Deputy Zac Frye reportedly revealed a small clear
bag containing a white crystal-like substance in the
center console, along with a pipe containing
residue.
The police report
noted that both the methamphetamine and the
paraphernalia were readily accessible by both
Underwood and Pierce.
The deputies
concluded that the substance appeared to be
methamphetamine. The methamphetamine weighed around
.9 grams.
Both Pierce and
Underwood denied ownership, and deputies charged
them both with possession of a controlled substance
schedule 2 and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Underwood was charged
with driving on roadways laned for traffic, MFG
delivery sale or possession of meth, possession of
drug paraphernalia, simple possession/casual
exchange and was released on $17,000.
Pierce was charged
with MFG, delivery, sale or possession of meth,
possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of
probation and was held on bond $16,000.
