Politics Pays
Does it really pay to get into local politics?
Depends where you get in. If you get in office in Lenoir City, it pays pretty good. If by chance you were to get elected to mayor, you would have a salary of $73,400.00 and a $5,000.00 car allowance. And as mayor, you are chairman of the Lenoir City Utilities Board. That comes with another annual $5,400.00 stipend and another $3,400.00 car allowance. Plus full family health insurance ($14,000.00) and retirement. Let's see, naught goes into naught, plus naught, naught, goes into..... better than a hundred grand, not including retirement? If you were to get elected to city council. you would receive an annual stipend of $7,200.00. Plus you are automatically a member of the LCUB board which comes with another annual $4,800.00 stipend, at least $3,600.00 in travel expenses, family health insurance ($14,000.00) plus full retirement. Let's see, naught goes into naught, plus naught, naught, goes into..... better than 30k not including retirement. If you wanted to get elected to the Treasurer/Recorder office, you'd receive a salary of $73,000.00 plus insurance and benefits. For this office, you don't even have to live in the city. I'm not saying anybody in elected office is a crook, far from it. I just don't understand why nobody new ever runs for office in Lenoir City when it's obviously so lucrative. |
