Paper registration leads to arrest

A Loudon man was arrested June 20 after law enforcement pulled him over for an unreadable paper registration in his back window.

Observing a silver Cadillac CTS traveling on Christian Street with its paper registration on the back glass unreadable, Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Cody Fritts conducted a traffic stop on Donaldson Road. The driver, Matthew Brock Underwood, 25, exited the vehicle. While talking to Underwood, Fritts noticed he was concealing what appear to be baggy with a white substance in his left hand. After asking him what was in his hand, Underwood began to flee on foot.

“While chasing Mr. Underwood on foot I repeatedly told Mr. Underwood to stop and he continued to run,” Fritts wrote in his report. “I caught up to Mr. Underwood and took him to the ground. Mr. Underwood continued to fight and resist slinging his arms and legs at me. Mr. Underwood attempted to strike me with his hands and try to run again.”

After getting Underwood under control, Fritts found a baggy with 6.8 grams of a green leafy substance later determined to be marijuana in his left pocket, according to the report. Underwood said he threw the baggy that was in his left hand, which was never recovered. Underwood said the item was a blunt.

Fritts found a 9-month-old child in Underwood’s back seat.

“When Mr. Underwood fled he left his child in the hot car with the vehicle turned off leaving the child in danger,” Fritts wrote in his report.

Undrwood was charged with evading arrest, simple possession/casual exchange, tampering/fabricating with evidence, child abuse or neglect (non-violent), driving on a revoked/suspended license, assault, resisting arrest, failure to appear-general sessions and violation of probation and held on $37,500 bond.
