Out Of County
In June of 2010, after years of discussion and
debate, the Loudon County Board of Education finally took action to
address out of county students attending Loudon County schools. At that
time, Loudon County schools were facing major over crowding. It was
obvious the out of county student population was putting a huge strain
on the system. At that time, it was estimated that there was 500-700 out
of county students in the 5,000 student system. At that time, the board voted to stop allowing any new out of county students to enroll into the system. However, to be fair, all current OOC students already in the system would be allowed to compleat their education in the Loudon County school system and any OOC students who had siblings not yet enrolled could still enroll. This decision turned out to be a huge success in addressing the over crowding issues. Within a few years, the county school system enrollment had fallen by 10% or nearly 500 students. Fast forward to now, some BOE members have decided they want to again start taking out of county students into the Loudon County school system. This is absurd but it will be on the BOE agenda Thursday night, 5/10, for a vote. Some suggest requiring OOC students to pay a fee. Doesn't matter what they do or how they do it. If they open those gates again, in no time, the schools will be overcrowded and the BOE will be complaining about overcrowding and the need for more schools. Loudon County tax payers are currently paying for more than fifty million dollars of new schools and additions to other schools for the next twenty years. Those new schools and additions were intentionally over built to allow for future growth to educate Loudon County students, not to be filled up with out of county students. Is it really fair for Loudon County tax payers to pay to educate children from other counties? I don't think so and if you don't, you may want to let your school board member know, before Thursday. |
