Old County Map
After last weeks short history on Old Stage Road, a
lot of readers showed interest in wanting to know more local history.
The map above is the oldest known map of the county. It's referred to as
a postal route map. It would have been used by the post office for
showing all the mail routes in the county. There were a lot of post
offices back then. While this map is dated 1930, the roads and routes shown are much older, probably dating back to the late 1800's. Apparently, the same map was updated over the years, sometimes by hand drawing. Of interest, Hwy. 70 was only partially completed as was Hwy. 11. Both of these roads were completed in the mid 1920's. Of course this was long before any dams were built in Loudon County. Martel Road, known then as the Knoxville Pike, was the main road to Knoxville and North Shore was called Possum Valley. There's lots more interesting names there too. Below is a link to the map in PDF. You should be able to download it and enlarge it to better see the details. Enjoy |
