The Numbers Are In
You will remember back during the May, Loudon County
primary election, the Knoxville Home Builders Association got involved
by supporting and promoting the candidates they thought would open
Loudon County to uncontrolled development. Those candidates were Eddie
Simpson, Julia Hurley and Mark Matlock. The Home Builders, through their
PAC sent out numerous mailers for each of these three candidates.
As with any political action committee, they are required to file financial statements with the local election commission office. Well, those reports are in and the numbers tell a good story. They call the money they spent on all the mailers an "in kind expenditure". According to the report, they, The Home Builders PAC, spent $7,686.00 on behalf of Eddie Simpson, $7,779.00 on Julia Hurley and $1,857.00 on Mark Matlock. Each of the three candidates also reported on their financial statements they also received a $500.00 cash contribution from the Home Builders PAC. Obviously, the PAC was all in and invested heavily in the three losing candidates. On a side note, the report also shows that Alan Sefton made a $5,000.00 contribution to the PAC. You will remember Sefton was the wealthy developer who sent out the letter in the 5th and 6th district supporting Simpson and Matlock, who ran down the county and said how sorry he was that he and his wife invested in Loudon County. Also, in an earlier report, developer John Cook, who has a lawsuit against the county, contributed $5,000.00 to the PAC. All that money got them nothing. Don't you love it when the will of the voters beats out the special interests? Guess they could buy the candidates but couldn't buy the voters. |
