November Petitions
Friday was day one for candidates to pick up
qualifying petitions for the city races. Several have already picked up
petitions and at least one, Tim Brewster, has already returned his and
qualified to run in the Loudon City council election. Aside from
Brewster, councilman, Jeff Harris, picked up to run for Loudon Mayor. A
second new council candidate, Bill Hendrix, also picked up. Incumbent
councilman Dennis Stewart also picked up. In Lenoir City, three incumbents and one challenger have already picked up their petitions. Mike Henline, Jim Shields and Jennifer Wampler all picked up. New comer, Todd Kennedy, also picked up. All you Lenoir City residents, businesses, churches, non-profits and so on that have complained so vociferously about the Lenoir City Rain Tax, Here's your chance. You've asked, "what can we do about the Rain Tax?" You can vote for candidates who promise to repeal the Rain Tax if elected. Of note, all incumbents running for re-election voted for the Rain Tax. That doesn't mean that even incumbents couldn't also vote to repeal. If there is no political penalty for elected officials who passed the Rain Tax, you need not think that if they all get re-elected they wouldn't raise the tax even higher than it is now. They can take it as high as they want. If all of you residents, businesses, churches, non-profits and so on are as upset and opposed to the Rain Tax as you have claimed to be, you should recruit, get behind and support candidates who would repeal the Rain Tax. This could include incumbents if they would change their position on the tax. If you're happy with the current Rain Tax and maybe an even higher Rain Tax, status quo is the way to go. I want to be very clear, I don't live in the city and I don't pay the Rain Tax and I'm not supporting or opposing any candidate. I'm simply answering the question I get all the time from Lenoir City residents, businesses, churches, non-profits and so, "What can we do?"
