‘No break’ for Greenback man charged with DUI A Greenback man faces multiple charges — including DUI — after not wearing a seatbelt resulted in him being stopped by a state Trooper. On Thursday, April 4, at approximately 4:28 p.m, Tennessee State Trooper Brandon Webb was sitting at the stop sign at the intersection of Campground Road and Axley Chapel Road when he reported witnessing a green Ford Ranger pass in front of him. Webb noticed that the driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and subsequently used his sirens to stop the vehicle. The vehicle pulled off onto a dirt road off Axley Chapel Road; when Webb approached the driver, the state Trooper reportedly noticed a strong odor of an intoxicating beverage coming from inside the vehicle. Webb then noticed an open 12-ounce beer that was located in one of the vehicle’s cup holders. He then asked the driver how much he had to drink and the driver stated that he had “about four or five” since 10 a.m. that morning. Webb then asked if the driver could step out to perform a field sobriety test. According to the report, the driver asked State Trooper Webb if he could “just give him a break” several times and if he would let the driver go. Webb persisted and said he wanted to transport the suspect down the road a few hundred feet so that he could perform a sobriety test in a paved parking lot, but the driver stated multiple times that the location where they were at was fine. Upon further investigation, the driver was identified as 75-yearold Kenneth Dotson of Greenback. Dotson had a prior DUI charge back in 1990. During Webb’s conversation with Dotson, the Trooper reportedly could smell the odor of an intoxicating beverage coming from his person from more than 10 feet away when he would speak to Webb. According to the report, Dotson’s eyes were bloodshot, red and watery. His mouth was dry and he kept licking his lips over and over due to “cotton mouth.” Webb reported that Dotson was having a hard time understanding basic instructions during all the tests. Dotson was asked on a scale from 0 to 10, with zero being completely sober and 10 being the most drunk you’ve ever been, where he felt he was at during that moment. Dotson stated that he felt he was at six. The arrest report stated that Dotson admitted to drinking the beer while driving and that he consumed at least four more 12-ounce beers before that. Dotson was then placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol. During the drive to the jail, Dotson stated that if Webb had driven by his house one day and stopped to give him field sobriety tests when he wasn’t drunk he still could not have passed the test given. Dotson was charged with driving under the influence, open container, use of safety belt in a passenger vehicle, violation of implied consent and held without bond. APRIL 1 .
