New York men jailed after theft attempt

Three New York men are facing various charges after a cashier at a local retail store was short-changed on Thanksgiving Day.
Lenoir City Police Officer Shannon Runyan notes in a report that Suraj Rostas, 19, and Vasile Anghel, 25, attempted the short-change during a $2,100 purchase they were making. Anghel short-changed the cashier of $100, but was met by a retail store representative. Rostas fled, leaving the purchased merchandise behind.

“The second male, Vasile Anghel, successfully short-changed the cashier of $100,” Runyan wrote in a report. “This is observed on (the retail store) camera footage. Contact was made with the defendant on a subsequent traffic stop wherein a California driver’s license was found in his wallet with his picture and a license number that belonged to a female in California and an unknown male’s name that is not his.”

Law enforcement learned Rostas’ identification was purchased from a friend for $25.

Ionel Rostas, 22, was also located in the vehicle. During the traffic stop, Ionel Rostas did not have a valid license and is unlicensed to drive in the United States, possessing only a passport from the United Kingdom.

“The name on the passport is Robert Meze, and this is the name that the defendant presented as his name to law enforcement,” Runyan wrote in a report. “The Department of Homeland Security Investigations however verified by fingerprint that the defendant’s name is Ionel Rostas and that U.S. Immigration encountered him in 2016 under the name Ionel Rostas.”
