New Chairwoman
A
new chairwoman has taken the reins of the Loudon County Solid Waste
Commission. Ms. Hunter who has been a vocal activist on issues of the
LCSWC for years was appointed to the board about a year ago by the
Loudon County commission. Hunter was appointed as chair early this month
with the resignation of out going county commissioner, Kelly Brewster,
who had served as the chair for the last year or so. The LCSWC has been embroiled in controversy for the last few months as they considered an unprecedented, and likely illegal contract amendment with the operators of the Matlock Bend landfill. The amendment is likely illegal due to the number of years the contract was extended. In addition, the amendment allows the landfill operator to increase the tipping fees at the landfill dramatically. This increase will be passed along to county residents in the way of higher garbage disposal costs. Ms. Hunter was the only member with the LCSWC to vote against the contract amendment. The Loudon County commission will be working with the new chairperson to try to untangle the mess the current LCSWC has made with the contract amendment. |
