More legal woes for
Booher
Damon Lawrence roanecounty.com Kent Booher’s criminal troubles continue to mount. Booher, a disbarred attorney from Roane County, was indicted by a federal grand jury in September for enticement and felony sexual offense against a minor while on a sex offender registry. A superseding indictment was filed against him on Tuesday. In addition to the previous counts, he’s now also charged with sex trafficking of a child, attempted production of child pornography and another count of enticement. He was arraigned on the superseding indictment on Wednesday. His Nov. 25 trial date was reset to April 7, 2020. Booher, 64, is being held at the Blount County Jail in Maryville without bond while the case is pending. Booher landed on the Tennessee Sexual Offender Registry after he pleaded guilty on two counts of statutory rape in Loudon County Criminal Court in 2014. The Tennessee Supreme Court disbarred him following the conviction. Booher’s prior sex crimes could come back to hurt him in the federal case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Kolman filed a notice earlier this month, which said the government plans to use the previous conviction as evidence. “The government intends to submit this evidence prior threat for the purpose of demonstrating the absence of mistake and/or lack of accident on the part of the defendant,” the notice said. The victim in the Loudon County case was 14. “The government is aware of minors who were victimized by the defendant in the same manner as the case in chief,” the notice said. “Specifically, the defendant has been previously convicted of aggravated statutory rape in 2013-CR-164(A) of a child who was 14-15 years old at the time. During the months the defendant was raping the child, he enticed her to do so through text messages, phone calls and further induced her with money, drugs and other inducements.” The federal charges aren’t Booher’s only legal problems. The Roane County grand jury indicted him last month on four counts of violating the sex offender registry. |
