Man jailed for DUI after vehicle fire

A Sevierville man was charged with driving under the influence after the vehicle he was driving on Interstate 75 caught fire.

Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Christian Rogers was dispatched Thursday to a vehicle fire on the northbound lane of I-75. Rogers talked with the driver, Jack Sutton, 66, who was disheveled and appeared lethargic.

Sutton said he fell asleep while driving and awoke to his car on fire. Sutton told Rogers that he was driving from his home in Sevierville and believed he was in Morristown. Sutton also said he was taking multiple medications.
A passerby who stopped to help said Sutton was still in the vehicle and could not unbuckle his seat belt when she arrived.

Once the fire was extinguished, investigators noticed a wire from inside the front passenger tire had been embedded in the vehicle’s wheel. The damage was consistent with a flat tire that had been driven until it came apart. The front driver’s side tire was undamaged.
Sutton refused to give a blood sample or sign the form indicating he refused. He did choose to be taken to an emergency room for evaluation.
Sutton was charged with driving under the influence, driving on a revoked/suspended license, due care and violation of implied consent and held without bond.
