Man jailed following dispute over pills

A Lenoir City man was arrested Saturday after keeping a man and woman in a vehicle at gun point.

Lenoir City Police Officer Riley Miller was dispatched to a parking lot in reference to a possible hostage situation. Dispatch informed him a man was holding another man hostage in a black minivan with a firearm.

Once on scene, Miller met Coty Joe Giffin, 32, who was in the driver’s seat, and another man standing next to the vehicle who seemed to be looking for something in the car, according to a report.

Both men were immediately placed in handcuffs. The woman who called police was also on scene and detained briefly.

The man told Miller that Giffin picked him and the woman up to “go smoke a joint” together. The man said Giffin had his nerve medication out, and when the trio returned to the car, Giffin accused the man and woman of stealing the medication, Miller wrote in a report.

Giffin then pulled out a handgun and told them they were “not going anywhere until his medication was found.” The woman jumped out of the car and ran to her mother’s home, where she contacted police, Miller wrote in a report.

The man said he convinced Giffin to pull into a parking lot so he could help him find the medication. At that point, law enforcement arrived.

Officers searched Giffin’s car and found a Bersa BP9CC 9mm handgun in the passenger side floorboard. In the center console, officers found the medication thought to be stolen and an open container of alcohol, Miller wrote in a report.

During a discussion with Giffin, Miller determined Giffin was under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.

Giffin was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment, contraband in a penal institute, unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon and public intoxication and held without bond.

Loudon man charged with car theftA Loudon man was arrested Friday for motor vehicle theft.

Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Shane Gaumer initiated a traffic stop at Highway 72 and Roberson Springs Road after seeing a gold 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee matching reports of a stolen vehicle. Gaumer confirmed the vehicle had the same license plate as the stolen car before initiating a traffic stop.

Gaumer met the driver, Shawn Ray Banks, 46, who was “cordial.” Gaumer asked Banks to step to the rear of the vehicle and told the man the car was reported stolen. Banks said he was unaware the car was stolen and had bought it two weeks ago for $1,200 and traded his Chevy S-10. Banks told Gaumer there should be a copy of the title and receipt in a folder inside the car, according to a report.

Gaumer was informed by Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office the vehicle was confirmed stolen by the Morristown Police Department. Gaumer found documents in the vehicle showing it had been registered to a woman who lives in Morristown.

Banks told Gaumer a man he met in Jefferson City sold him the car. The man told him the woman who owns the car had passed away and the car was now in his possession. Banks was not able to provide a bill of sale or receipt, Gaumer wrote in a report.

Dispatch also advised Gaumer that Banks’ license was revoked.

Banks was charged with theft of property and driving on a revoked/suspended license and released on $2,000 bond.
