Man arrested after assault with hammer

A Maryville man is facing an aggravated assault charge after law enforcement responded to a possible domestic assault May 5 in Greenback.

Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Tony Branson met a woman in the 200 block of Chilhowee Avenue. LCSO Deputy Kevin Kirkland talked with Brady James Hawley, 21, at a residence on Walnut Street. Branson went to the Walnut Street residence after statements were taken by both officers.

The woman claimed an argument ensued after Hawley thought she was texting another man. After trying to leave the residence, Hawley pushed the woman and took her car keys while she had her daughter in her arms.

“She tried to defend herself by pouring tobacco juice on him, at which time Mr. Hawley started beating her on the head with his fist and a hammer,” Branson wrote in the report. “She kicked him a couple of times and went to the neighbor’s home.”

Hawley told officers the couple had gotten into a fight over “little things, a little bit of pushing occurred, screaming and they both walked away.”

The woman refused to be taken to the hospital by emergency personnel and was instead taken by family. Photos were taken of the hammer and a doorknob broken with the hammer, according to the report.

Hawley was charged with aggravated assault and released on $20,000 bond.
