Loudon County Sheriff's Office: "We can't prevent, but we can mitigate active-shooter situations"

LOUDON CO., Tenn. (WVLT) - The recent deadly mass shooting in El Paso, Texas , is a reminder that an active shooter situation can happen to any state, city, or town at any time. This is why East Tennessee law enforcement agencies said they're confident they have the right safety measures in place for an active shooter situation.

Matt Fagiana, a spokesperson with the Loudon County Sheriff's Office said the office can't prevent active shooters from happening, but they do know how to mitigate.

All first responders, including school teachers, in the county have gone through active-shooter training. One of their inclusive resources they use is 'Stop the Bleed.'

It's a medical tool anyone from the community can do to help prevent someone from bleeding to death after they're shot.

"Stop the bleed is very important in our community because we are teaching the average person to be able to recognized a significant injury and to take steps using a tourniquet like piece of equipment to help control the bleed," Fagiana said. "With a lot of active shooter situations, we know that it's not the gunshot wound that is often fatal, it's the fact that victims go without medical treatment and they bleed out before medical treatment can get to them."

There are annual training classes open to the public. They're typically held at the the Venue in Lenoir City.
