Loudon County
Emergency Communications District (E-911) announced March 30, 2020
that is has begun accepting text to 9-1-1 service for all of Loudon
County. Wireless customers can now send a text to 9-1-1 during an
emergency. Text to 9-1-1 should only be used in an emergency
situation, when placing a call is not possible. For instance, if the
caller is deaf, hard of hearing, speech impaired, or when speaking
out loud would place the caller in danger. “Voice calls are always
the best, but text will now be available for those crucial times,
when voice calls are just not an option” says Jennifer White,
Director.
Loudon County E-911 has implemented this life saving technology by
utilizing Motorola Solutions’ CallWorks system. This system allows
call takers seamlessly manage their text to 9-1-1 interactions with
the public. CallWorks enables call handlers to see text sessions and
prioritize their response to messages. A conversation window allows
911 professionals to type messages or select predefines common
questions and phrases to speed response.
“By implementing CallWorks, Loudon County is reaping the benefits of
text-to-9-1-1, enabling the public to contact 9-1-1 via text,
creating additional opportunities for hearing and speech-impaired
individuals to contact 9-1-1 and providing individuals who may not
be able to talk but are able to send a text with a lifeline during
the crisis,” said Lynne Houserman, vice president, Emergency Call
Handling, Software Enterprise, Motorola Solutions. “Simply put:
Loudon County is placing its center further down the path to Next
Generation 9-1-1 – not only by choosing a standards-based solution,
but also ensuring emergency call handlers are equipped for the
future of public safety communications.”
