Loudon County deputies arrest
Canadian woman accused of scamming people out of $60K
LCSO says According to the office, Soki Hangi of Quebec was part of a scamming operation in Loudon and Monroe Counties LOUDON, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that detectives and deputies had arrested a Canadian woman who had scammed people out of at least $60,000.
According
to the office, Soki Hangi of Quebec was part of a scamming
operation in Loudon and Monroe Counties. LCSO officials said the
suspects were calling older adults, claiming to be their
grandchildren.
“The scammer will call, act as if
they are the grandchild of the victim, and convince the victim
that they (the supposed grandchild) have been arrested and need
money for bail,” the office said. “The scammer is even using the
same nicknames that the grandchild would call the grandparent
(Grandpa, Mamaw, etc.) that helps further convince the victim
that they are actually the victim’s grandchild.”
Hangi was reportedly acting as a courier, the person who would pick up the “bail money” from the victims. She was arrested on Thursday, three days after she flew into Nashville and began working on the scams, the office said.
On top
of everything, office officials also said they believe more
people were fooled by the scam, asking them to report it by
calling 865-458-9081.
