Loudon County asphalt company causing concern for neighbors

LOUDON COUNT, Tenn. (WATE) - A man in Loudon County is trying to make a change less than a mile from his house.

MIke Weaver says he believes the Greenback Asphalt Company is polluting the air and causing health concerns.

Built in 1999, Weaver has been working to make a change -- specifically in the hours machines run -- for over a decade.

"When your county puts an asphalt plant in your backyard, you're not going to see it the same way. I hear a backup buzzer, I hear the jet engine. I wake up to that. I don't get any sleep," said Weaver.

Across the road from the asphalt company is Greenback Quarry, a company Weaver says has actually started work later in the morning to be respectful of neighbors.

"It blows as far as the wind will take it, same as the asphalt plant. All those toxins that're not going through the filtration system, they're going that way too," said Weaver.

Weaver spoke at a Loudon County Commission meeting Monday night, sharing videos and photos he took of the machines working -- even the view from his neighbor's yard.

"The best case would be if we could come out of this and both sides be satisfied and come to a mutual agreement. Just looking at what we're dealing with. There may be state or federal agencies that might supersede what we can do," said District 3 County Commissioner.

Weaver says he doesn't want to put the company out of business, but he hopes for regulation and changes to the work schedule to keep the natural country area clean and safe.

We reached out to Greenback Asphalt Company for comment and will update this story when we hear back.
