News Herald Arrest Report

Local man jailed after fleeing traffic stop

A Lenoir City man is facing multiple charges after law enforcement noticed he could not stay in one lane while driving.

Stopping a vehicle for failure to maintain its lane of travel at Lakeview and Beal Chapel roads, Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Zachary Frye talked with the driver, Brandon Thomas Deaton, who said his driver’s license was not with him but he had a Social Security number. Dispatch informed Frye that Deaton’s license was revoked and he had a Knox County warrant.
While Frye was back at his patrol vehicle, Deaton drove away from the traffic stop. Frye pursued.

“The driver then slammed on his brakes, almost causing me to run into the rear of his vehicle,” Frye wrote in the report. “The vehicle then continued down Beals Chapel with speeds reaching 85-90 mph. The driver was driving in both lanes of travel. The vehicle then lost control in a curve and ran through a yard, taking down a fence and (hitting) a tree at the intersection of Old Spears Road and Beals Chapel Road.”

Deaton then fled on foot through the woods. Frye was unable to catch him due to thick vegetation, according to the report. A K-9 was brought on scene, but was unable to find the man. Deaton was found later at a local gas station as Frye was fueling his vehicle.
Deaton claimed he had gotten a ride to the gas station.

Deaton, 27, Lenoir City, was charged with felony evading, misdemeanor evading, driving on a revoked/suspended license, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, vandalism, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, financial responsibility law, driving an unregistered vehicle, due care and a Knox County warrant and held on $14,500 bond.

After being informed she was arrested for criminal trespass, Mills began hitting her head against the vehicle’s cage. “I then opened the door and put my hand on her shoulder in an attempt to stop Ms. Mills from harming herself,” Parton wrote in the report. “Ms. Mills then raised her foot up in an attempt to kick me and I removed her from my vehicle and laid her on the ground to prevent injury to myself or Ms. Mills.” Mills, while kicking and screaming, claimed she was being murdered and she needed help.
