Local chase ensues over stolen vehicle

A Birmingham, Ala., man is in custody after law enforcement verified he was in a stolen vehicle, which eventually led to a high-speed chase through part of Loudon County.

Lenoir City Police Officer John Ailor observed a vehicle without tail lights on traveling Friday on Highway 11. Ailor was informed by dispatch that the vehicle was reported stolen and a traffic stop was initiated.

Ailor asked the driver, Guy Warren Springfield, to stick his hands out of the window. Springfield then made an “unintelligible” comment and sped off.

Ailor pursued the vehicle down Shaw Ferry Road, where Springfield was able to drive through a yard and get turned around and headed back the other way, according to the report. The pursuit continued on Highway 70.

Springfield passed a vehicle on a double yellow line, failed to stop at several stop signs and several red traffic signals and also drove in the oncoming traffic lane for several thousand feet at a time. He also stopped abruptly, attempting to get Ailor to rear-end Springfield's vehicle.

He continued to flee and was stopped at the Roane County line after driving over spike strips and wrecking in a yard. Springfield jumped out of the vehicle and dove on the ground before being taken into custody.

Springfield, 40, was charged with driving on a revoked/suspended license, reckless endangerment, theft of property and evading arrest and held on $70,000 bond.
