Lenoir City could halt new apartment construction projects for 1 year

LENOIR CITY, Tenn. (WATE) — Lenoir City continues getting larger and growing pains are becoming more apparent in the area. With that, the city council is putting a plan in place to temporarily stop new apartments from being built.

“City Council realized there was an influx of apartments and they wanted to put the brakes on it,” Lenoir City Mayor Tony Aikens said. “There have been several hundred approved. The moratorium doesn’t affect those. However, even though they are approved they may not be built right away.”

The moratorium would last one year if passed. City Councilman Todd Kennedy said the city is currently taking a look at where it stands now before continuing any building.

“The zoning ordinances haven’t been updated since the late 70’s,” Kennedy said. “The public has been saying for a long time that we need to push the pause button on high-density development until we can get a study done to see exactly where are we now and where are we going. We just want to get a handle on that.”

While many apartment projects have been approved, it is taking some time for the ball to get rolling on construction.

“I can’t say when they are going to be built. It may be as long as 10 years or as short as six months,” Mayor Aikens said.

Kennedy said this process is a step in the right direction.

“This is where the administration wanted to push it at this point,” Kennedy said. “I was in agreeance with that. I would have taken it a step further and stopped all R-3 for the next 12 months.”

This moratorium will only impact multi-family builds. The vote will take place on Monday, June 24th.
