LENOIR CITY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- We've seen so much devastation from Hurricane Irma, but it brought out some good in East Tennessee.

Local 8 News Anchor Lauren Davis spoke to one Florida family who got quite a pleasant surprise.

Amberly Shorette didn't have the money to leave Florida. but she had no choice. She said, "Having a one-year-old, a three-year-old and three cats, I wasn't comfortable staying."

So she headed north to Tennessee, and after five days, she was very worried. Shorette says,

"We were very stressed," she said. "We were thinking, 'How do we get home? What money are we going to use?'"

Not five minutes after that thought, she and her husband stopped to get gas at a Kenjo gas station in Lenoir City on Highway 75. What happened next was very unexpected.

"The man reaches his hand out to my husband," explained Shorette. "Then he says, 'You know the Lord loves you.' And he opened his hand and there was a hundred dollars in his hand."

She couldn't believe it. A complete stranger had given them $100 without the family even asking for help. Amberly teared up.

Now, the mother says she has money to be able to make it back to Florida with a renewed sense of hope in human kindness.

"When you're feeling down and a stranger comes there at the right time, it's amazing," she said. "There is a God looking out for you."

This isn't the only instance of kindness in Tennessee this week after Hurricane Irma. In Gatlinburg, a Florida couple whose car broke down received $200 and a restaurant gift card from a restaurant manager.
