News Herald Arrest Report
Interstate road rage leads to
arrest
A
Sweetwater man was arrested May 11 and charged with
aggravated assault after a reported road-rage incident.
Loudon County Sheriffs Deputy Nicholas Crawford was dispatched in response to an armed person on Interstate 75. Crawford was told by dispatch that a man had pointed a firearm at another motorist and followed the vehicle for a length of time. Deputies located the vehicles and detained the driver, who was identified as Michael Ray Smith Sr., 64. Smith had a handgun easily accessible from his cars dashboard. Smith admitted being involved in a road-rage incident but denied pointing the gun at anyone. In a search of Smiths vehicle, deputies found six Oxycodone pills for which Smith did not have a prescription.
Crawford then
talked with the couple in the other vehicle, who said
they had been driving in the fast lane when Smith came
up behind them and started tailgating and honking his
horn. After they moved into the right lane, they said
Smith drove beside them and pointed his handgun at the
family, which included a child.
The couple told the deputy that Smith continued to follow them and point the gun at them until law enforcement intervened. Smith was charged with three counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a dangerous situation and simple possession/casual exchange and released on $72,000 bond. May 6
