MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WATE) - Yes, you read that headline correctly.

The Greenback baseball team lost the Class A state championship on Friday before winning in the same game.

With two out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Trinity Christian first baseman Garrett Bond hit a walk-off game-winning single to right-center.

But he never touched first base.

Before Trinity Christian could get off its dog pile celebration, they knew something might be wrong. Greenback head coach Wes Caldwell knew immediately.

"I don't know why I directed my eyes to the guy at first but I was like, 'he missed first by six feet we're gonna keep playing right here', Caldwell said."

"The feeling of defeat went all through the body," senior outfielder Seth Riddle said. "I didn't know what was going on, what was happening then everyone was yelling on our side that they got an out because he didn't touch the base."

The umpires agreed.

Greenback and Trinity Christian went to the eighth inning tied 1-1 and the Cherokees quickly took advantage of their second chance.

With Riddle on third in the ninth, Greenback senior Michael Severance laid down a squeeze bunt to give his team a 2-1 lead and the eventual lead.

Greenback (33-10), who didn’t have a baseball program five years ago, won its first state baseball championship in school history.

Caldwell will now have to own up to his side of a bet that he made with his team.

“Now I have to get the (Greenback) G (logo) tattoo,” Caldwell said. “Me and the pitchers were running one day … they said, ‘Will you bleach all your hair if we win it.’ I said, ‘I’ll get a purple mohawk. I’ll get a tattoo.’ They said, ‘He’s got to get a tatt’.’

“I’m getting the G tatt’ now. … I’ll wear it with pride the rest of my life."
