Here's Your Sign 6

You really have to ask yourself, why does mayor Aikens and his loyal council even bother to pass political sign regs. We have seen over and over this election that they absolutely refuse to even follow their own regulations.

As of Saturday afternoon, two and a half days before election day begins, all the incumbents have already staked out their spots across from the Memorial Building where day of voting takes place for most city residents. Councilwoman Wampler and Aikens at least have their vehicles, with signs, on private property. But councilman Mike Henline has his truck and sign parked on city right of way, in stark violation of the new June 2024 city sign regulations. Councilmember Wampler's truck and the white jeep are also parked within the 100' exclusion zone for campaigning.

But councilman Eddie Simpson tops them all. He's already set up his unmanned campaign tent, with sign, on city right of way, all in violation of the new sign rules. And Simpson was one of the council members who was so happy about the new sign rules. In addition, someone, I can't say for sure who, took a piece of cardboard and covered the handicap placard in the parking lot underneath the white jeep. I believe the jeep belongs to councilman Eddie Simpson. It's the same one he used as a placeholder during early voting.

Maybe somewhere in the fine print it said, these new rules only apply to anyone who challenges the incumbents.

Tennessee law prohibits placing campaign signs within 100 feet of the entrance of the building that has an early vote center or Election Day polling place. The 100 ft boundary is marked with a stake in the ground. No signs, literature, or campaigning may take place in the area between the stake and the building. TCA 2-7-111 (a)-(b)(1)
