LENOIR CITY, Tenn. (WATE) – Crews were able to contain a leak of hazardous materials that was reported on Thursday at a Lenior City truck stop.

First responders were at the scene of a TA Truck Stop on Watt Road around 4:30 p.m. A spokesperson for the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office said around 6:30 p.m. that the truck stop was evacuated.

LCSO also said during a press conference that there were calls about some people having eye and ear irritation issues in the area.

LCSO spokesperson added that TEMA crews were working to relieve pressure in the truck, which was caused by the liquid leaking from the truck turning into a gas when it came into contact with air.

Rural Metro Battalion Chief Ken Tuggle said that the leak came from a container of peroxyacetic acid. According to the LCSO spokesperson, “the leak did not pose a risk of harm to the public.”

Around 7:15 p.m., Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesperson Mark Nagi shared an update, saying, “TEMA and THP have asked TDOT to be prepared to close I-40/I-75 as it would fall in a potential contamination zone so we are preparing for that possibility.”

However, he posted another update around 8:30 p.m. stating that TDOT forces have been released from the area with the exception of one Knox County crew. The crew brought sand to the site.

People were told to avoid the area earlier today. Tennessee Highway Patrol posted on Twitter stating they are assisting with needed aid due to the leaking hazardous material.

THP added around 9:19 p.m. that the hazard material has been contained.

Agencies at the scene include the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, Knox County Rural Metro Hazmat Crews, Tennessee Department of Transportation, Loudon County Emergency Management Agency and Loudon County Fire/Rescue.
