Hazardous waste collection events in Loudon, Cocke counties

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - The state of Tennessee is hosting four hazardous waste collection events later this month, two of which are in East Tennessee.

One will be in Cocke County at Lowe's, 120 Epley Road, in Newport from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 21. Another will be in Loudon County at the Loudon County Justice Center, 12680 Highway 11 West, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the same date.

Events are also scheduled on April 21 in Giles County and Madison County.

Household hazardous waste materials are flammable, toxic, reactive and/or corrosive and should not be put in the regular garbage. This includes things like cleaning fluids, pesticides, mercury thermometers and thermostats, fluorescent lamps, lithium and button batteries, aerosols, adhesives, medications, brake fluid, swimming pool chemicals,  paint thinner and used needles in sturdy containers.

Ammunition, explosives, alkaline batteries, paint, electronics, and any empty containers that should be disposed of in normal trash will not be accepted at these events.

Household waste may be disposed of for free, but there is a cost for disposal of waste from places like businesses, schools, farms, churches, etc. Call (615) 643-3170 to schedule an appointment and get a price quote.

When transporting materials to the site, place containers in sturdy boxes lined with newspaper to prevent spills and cross-contamination in the trunk of a car or back of a truck. Be sure to keep materials away from children and pets. Materials should be kept in the original containers whenever possible. If not, place each waste in a separate plastic container with a secure lid and label its contents.
