Guns In Schools?
Tennessee legislators have been in the news a lot
over the last few weeks over a bill that would allow teachers and other
school staff to carry guns in schools. Of course the logic is that it
would be another line of defense in the event of an attack in a school.
Both sides of the debate, for and against the idea, have been vocal on
the issue. Well, the debate is over. The governor signed the bill into
law last week. Each school system will decide if they will allow school
staff to carry on campus. Almost before the ink was dry on the bill, several school systems had already come out to make a public statement that their school system would not allow their teachers and staff to carry guns on campus. That's all fine and good. But why on earth would they feel they need to make a public statement on the matter? Basically, when a school system goes public, to state their staff will not be armed, they've made it clear to any bad guys listening that their schools are unprotected and would be a much easier target for some nut to cause harm to staff and students. Wouldn't it make a lot more since to just not make any public statement on the matter? They could still opt not to participate in the program, not allow their staff to carry, but but not let the bad guys know. At least keep them guessing which schools are and are not armed? It's a crazy world we live in now and there are nuts everywhere just waiting for an opportunity to create havoc. They might just feel a little different about bursting into a school if they thought there might me multiple people that can fight back. There's no law that a school system has to announce to the world they're defenseless. School administrators may not want their staff armed, that's fine but they don't have to tell the world. |
