Gun threat leads to assault charge

A Lenoir City man was charged with aggravated assault Thursday after pulling a gun and repeatedly threatening another man.

Lenoir City Police Officer Ethan Carroll responded to a Lenoir City church regarding an armed subject call. Upon arrival, he spoke with the victim, who was at the church to help a woman prepare for an upcoming yard sale. He stated that while he was helping, the woman’s phone rang and she asked him to answer it because she was busy. He did so and connected with Terry Layne Cole, 67.

Cole became angry that the victim, not the woman, had answered the phone and told him he would be on his way and “had something for him,” at which point the woman warned the victim that Cole regularly carries a firearm. When Cole arrived at the church, he started cursing and yelling at the victim and then pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at him.

The victim pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at Cole to protect himself, shouting “don’t you do it” at him. Cole retreated and left the scene prior to Carroll’s arrival.

Carroll saw video of the altercation which clearly identified Cole as the primary aggressor, and a witness provided a written statement backing up the victim’s story.

Cole called LCPD to inform them he was coming over to give his side of the story. When he arrived, he was taken into custody. According to Carroll’s report, Cole told the arresting officers that “if he had had a round chambered, he would have blown (the victim) away, and that he has a sniper rifle and would take care of (the victim).”

Cole was charged with aggravated assault and held on $100,000 bond.

Father, son charged with assaultA Loudon man and his father were both charged with assault Oct. 5 after getting into an altercation with a minor.

Lenoir City Police Officer Ethan Carroll responded to a home in Lenoir City for a potential domestic and observed a man yelling in the front yard and a teenager running down the road.

Carroll spoke with the juvenile victim, who stated that Bradley Ryan Nance, 32, had been verbally abusing a woman inside the house. Knowing that Nance had struck the woman in the past, the victim had confronted him and started yelling and cussing at him.
Nance retaliated by coming into the victim’s room and taking away his Nintendo. A shoving match ensued, after which Nance put the victim in a chokehold and held him down. Nance’s father, Robert Everette Nance, 67, then came into the room and slapped the victim across the mouth, busting his lip.

Once Bradley let go, the victim ran outside, picked up a brick and threatened to throw it at Robert’s truck. However, he dropped it when Robert started walking towards him and started running away. Robert picked up the brick and threw it at the teenager, trying to hit him.

Carroll observed the brick lying in the street and noted injuries to the victim’s lip, neck and arms consistent with his story. A fourth-party witness also confirmed the story as related by the victim.

Both Robert and Bradley were placed into custody without any further incident and a Department of Child Services form was completed.

Bradley Nance was charged with aggravated assault and released on $5,000 bond.

Robert Nance was charged with assault and released on $1,500 bond.
