Greenback senior kicking for childhood cancer awareness

GREENBACK, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Most senior athletes are in the game to win it, but Creed Ramsey's goal isn't just on the field.

Ramsey is the kicker at Greenback. He is dedicating his senior year to raising money for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, helping kids and their families dealing with childhood cancer. Folks can pledge a certain amount for every extra point he makes. All you have to do is search his name.

"My goal is 80. If I kick 80 extra points, then I've reached that goal. Throughout the whole season, anyone can donate towards every extra point that I kick," he said.

Creed said he was inspired to get involved by other kickers across the nation, but his sister fueled his passion to find a cure.

"There were a lot of fundraisers and stuff that happened and I would always go with my parents and see the other kids who had the same problem she did," he said. "I just felt real bad about it. I felt like I needed to do something about it. So once I found out about Alex's Lemonade Stand, I knew that was something I wanted to do."

"He's always been the kid that thinks about other people before himself," said Creed's mom, Tiffany. "I kind of wasn't surprised when he wanted to do this because he's done other things in honor of his sister. He was just 12 when she was diagnosed, but it really hit him just about as hard it hit his dad and I."

Doctors diagnosed his sister, Averi, with leukemia when she was just seven-years-old. She's cancer free now, but Creed said the fight goes beyond his family.

"It's something bigger than yourself, you know? Just knowing other kids have those same problems," he said. "They're not going through that alone and I hope they know that."

His goal is to raise $1,500 dollars through donations and pledges.

"We're going to be just a little drop in the bucket, but maybe it will make a difference," said Tiffany.
