Greenback duo charged with drug possession after traffic stop

A Greenback couple is reportedly facing drug possession charges after being pulled over due to non-functional registration lights.

At approximately 1:05 a.m on Friday, Aug. 2, Deputy Charles Watson with the Loudon County Sheriff ’s Office, observed a Dodge pickup truck traveling on Highway 11.

Watson reported the vehicle had no registration lights and that he knew the driver had a suspended driver’s license. Watson stopped the vehicle on Highway 11 at Ford Road and made contact with 62-yearold William Riden of Greenback in the driver’s seat and 39-year-old Kelly Wright in the passenger’s seat. Riden was asked by the deputy if he had any drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle — to which the driver answered that he had a “rig” in his pocket.

Watson then asked Riden to exit his own vehicle and step back to the patrol vehicle. Loudon County Dispatch then advised the deputy that Wright had an active warrant out of Lenoir City.

According to the report obtained by The News-Herald, Wright was placed in custody without incident.

Deputies performed a probable cause search of the vehicle due to the presence of drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle.

Watson discovered two baggies both containing what was believed to be “crack” cocaine stuffed in the passenger seat next to where Wright was sitting. He also located a glass pipe with drug residue in the same spot.

Deputy Freeman then searched Riden due to the “rig” in his pocket and located a cut straw containing drug residue. Freeman discovered a piece of plastic inside Riden’s that also had drug residue, according to reports.

Riden was placed in custody without incident, and all items listed above were placed into evidence.

The suspect’s vehicle was towed and the Greenback duo was transported to the Loudon County Jail.

Wright was charged with simple possession/ casual exchange, possession of drug paraphernalia, capias-municipal court and was held on $3,000 bond.

Riden was charged with driving on revoked/ suspended license, possession of drug paraphernalia and also was held on $3,000 bond.

MARYVILLE WOMAN FACES DUI CHARGE

Following poor driving within Loudon County, a woman now faces a DUI charge.

On Monday, July 29, at 10:43 p.m., Deputy Daniel Allen with the Loudon County Sheriff ’s Office was traveling on Highway 95 toward Highway 411.

Allen observed a blue Chevrolet Spark traveling the same direction on Highway 95. The Spark was unable to maintain its lane.

Upon turning left onto Highway 411, Allen activated his emergency equipment and performed a traffic stop.

Allen found 52-yearold Claudine R. Wooten of Maryville driving the vehicle. According to the report, Wooten had a strong smell of alcoholic beverage coming from her breath and Allen also observed an open alcoholic beverage on the floor of the passenger seat area.

Wooten admitted she had been drinking the “Clubtails Sex on the Beach” while she had been driving. Wooten was then asked to step out of the vehicle and she agreed to performing standardized field sobriety tests.

The police report states Wooten performed poorly on the tests.

During a search of the vehicle, a water bottle was found that had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from it. Wooten said she had drunk another drink out of it, but stated it was the day before.

Wooten was taken into custody and agreed to a blood draw. She was transported to Fort Loudoun Medical Center without incident.

Upon completion of the blood draw, Wooten was transported to the Loudon County Jail — again without incident.
