The Grand Plan
Timberlake
Long before there was a Tellico Village and even
before Tellico Dam was completed, developers already had a plan for the
new lake and land that would be available after the dam was done. TVA
knew for many years they would be essentially stealing people's land for
what they saw as a grand plan for the area. The plan was for the city of Timberlake. It would be a city of 30,000-50,000, depending on which report you read, where Tellico Village is now located. For those who are not old enough or are newer to the area, won't remember all the drama associated with the Tellico Dam project. It was held up for years for different reasons but ultimately the dam would not be stopped no matter how many local folks were opposed to it. During the construction of most of the TVA dams, property owners only lost the land that was covered by the water impounded behind the dam. Not the case with the Tellico Dam. If a property owner had a hundred acres and the water only covered ten acres, TVA took all the property, $400.00 per acre in most cases, like it or not. It was absolutely, legalized government land theft. Below is an early story on the planned Timberlake city proposed for Loudon County. Fortunately, it never happened. The article is from a 1972 Loudon Herald news paper.
