A grand
jury will decide whether proceed with the case against a Lenoir
City woman accused of killing a North Carolina motorcyclist when
she slammed into him from behind on Interstate 40 in September.
On the early morning of Sept. 4, 63-year-old Dwight Woods of North Carolina was riding his Gold Wing motorcycle on Interstate 40 near Pellissippi Parkway through Knoxville when he was hit from behind by a BMW SUV, according to a Knoxville Police Department crash report. The SUV driver, Jessie Hodge, 31, struck Woods' motorcycle as she traveled west near Pellissippi Parkway, according to court records. The motorcycle was pinned against the front of the SUV when Officer D'Brian Varnado responded to the incident. Hodge had run into a nearby field after the crash, never attempting to call 911 to let dispatchers know she had just hit and killed a man, officers testified Tuesday in Knox County Criminal Court. Woods died at the scene. Varnado told the court that he knew Hodge from her time working as a Knox County Sheriff's Office corrections officer several years earlier. Officer Horace Lane told the court Hodge refused a blood alcohol test after being returned to the scene of the crash. She was charged with following too closely and leaving the scene of an accident knowing death resulted. Woods' son told Knox News the family has been frustrated by the investigation and argue that the charges are too lenient. "This really hurts our family. I rode with my Dad all the time. I knew exactly how safe he was on the road. If he had even come close to turning into her lane, he would have sped up," Jeremiah Esquibel said. "My dad loved his kids, and now he will miss all the little things. He was a great man and we just want to see him get the justice he deserves." |
