Former THP trooper wins Republican nomination for Tennessee House seat

VONORE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Lowell Russell, a former Tennessee Highway Patrol sergeant, won the Republican nomination in House District 21. His campaign, a grassroots effort, got 45 percent of the vote in a three-way race. He defeated opponents Doyle Arp and Lenoir City Mayor Tony Aikens.

“I am extremely grateful to the voters of this district allowing me to represent them as their Republican nominee,” said Russell. “This was a strong grassroots campaign. It wasn’t about me. It was about a team of motivated individuals passionate about a cause. I’d like to thank everyone who assisted in this effort and everyone who gave me the honor of their vote.”

Russell's career with THP ended when he was injured in the line of duty. In March of 2012, a truck driver fell asleep at the wheel early in the morning. He crashed into Russell, who was stopped alongside I-40 West near Gallaher View Road, finishing up paperwork from a previous traffic stop. However, Russell recovered and said he forgave the truck driver.

Other than his career with THP, Russell also worked with the Monroe County Sheriff's as a Sheriff's Deputy.

“I am tremendously energized by this victory. But, I am taking nothing for granted. There is still a general election campaign to run and I plan on taking my conservative message directly to the people of Loudon and Monroe counties,” Russell stated.

In a statement released to the press, Russell thanked his opponents, Aikens and Arp.

“I was grateful for the opportunity to run against two great men for whom I have tremendous respect,” Russell said. “Tony Aikens has served Lenoir City well as mayor and Doyle Arp is a great pillar of this community. I believe their involvement in this race made me a better candidate. I will be counting on them for counsel as I embark on this general election campaign.”

In November, he will face the Democratic nominee Laura Miller in the general election.
