Election Changes
This election will bring several changes to local
government.
Long time 2nd district commissioner, Earlena Maples was narrowly defeated by Julia Hurley by 28 votes. Maples was the only elected democrat left in county government. She has served on commission for 32 years. Commission will lose many years of experience, knowledge and historical perspective with Ms. Maples loss. Ms. Hurley is a new comer to local politics but did serve one two year term in the state legislature. Forth district commissioner chose not to seek re-election. Gary Whitfield won the seat to replace Bradshaw. This will be Whitfield's first time into county politics. Sixth district commissioner, Steve Harrelson, ran for the mayor's office back in May but was defeated by incumbent Buddy Bradshaw. This left Harrelson't seat open. That position was won by Adam Waller back in May. Waller is also new to local politics. The rest of the incumbent commissioners will be returning for another four year term. New commissioners will take their seats September 1st. The swearing in ceremony for all elected officials is scheduled August 28th at the old court house. |
