News Herald Arrest Report

Domestic dispute, unwanted guest lead to separate arrests

After receiving a third party complaint on Friday, Jan. 17, Deputy Daniel Allen arrived at a house on Foster Road, where he was met by David Cardwell and Autumn Horton.

Deputy Allen reported that he quickly realized something was wrong as the couple began to approach him.

As the Deputy began speaking to Horton, he noticed blood coming from her right hand and lower lip, as well as bruising on the left side of her neck and face.

According to a report obtained by The News-Herald from the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office, Horton admitted to Deputy Allen that she had consumed at least three drinks at dinner before the altercation began. Horton reported that her and Cardwell had become frustrated over her 18-year-old son not participating in household upkeep during their drive home. This is where Horton stated that Cardwell got angry enough to threaten her son, hit her and grab her by the throat.

According to Horton’s account and the reports, the argument continued through their drive and upon returning home. Somehow during this time, Horton’s mother in Rockwood became aware of the situation and proceeded to call 911.

When Deputy Allen approached Cardwell for his side of the story, things reportedly became skewed. While initially agreeing with Horton’s statement, Cardwell reportedly said that as soon as he commented on her son Horton began to hit him, leading him to push off in self defense.

Cardwell also had blood on his lip as well as a strong smell of alcohol on his breath. He had admitted to drinking at dinner that night, too.

While Deputy Allen didn’t have enough evidence to identify one clear inciting individual — and with no other way to assure that the two stayed separate until the morning — both Cardwell and Horton were taken into police custody on grounds of domestic assault.

UNWANTED GUEST RESISTS ARREST

Deputy Daniel Allen paid a visit to Steekee Road on the evening of Jan. 18 — discovering an unwanted visitor at the residence of a woman and her children.

The visitor, identified as Christopher Purdy, met the deputy at the front gate where the law enforcement officer reportedly noticed alcohol on the visitor’s breath — reporting that Purdy was unable to stand without swaying or leaning on a fence post for support. Purdy began to explain to the deputy that he wanted the woman out of his house.

The deputy explained that the woman and her children were the ones who had residency at the home … not him … and that he knew this due to multiple calls to the residence within the past year. Purdy reportedly disagreed with Allen — saying that he was the owner of the place.

The law enforcement officer reportedly explained that Purdy could attempt to evict the family if he felt he had a case. Purdy then interrupted the deputy, reportedly saying that “he knew people” and wanted them gone.

When Deputy Allen made contact with the woman in the residence, she reportedly said Purdy had been drinking and got disgruntled when he noticed a friend of hers on Facebook. When he was let into the home, Allen noted no signs of damage, according to the report given to The News-Herald. The report also stated that the woman denied anything physical occurring.

When Allen made his way back outside, Purdy again began to hurl threats at him in the front yard. Even as the deputy continued to explain his options and try to coerce Purdy into returning home and getting into bed, Purdy still continued to make threats and refused to listen, according to the police report.

Due to the public nature of the altercation and Allen deducing that Purdy was clearly intoxicated, he made the decision to bring him into custody — which Purdy initially resisted. Once he and Deputy Yap were able to control Purdy, they placed him in double- locked handcuffs and he was transported to the Loudon County Jail with no further incident.
