DA Files Hurley Suit

Ninth Judicial District Attorney General, Russell Johnson, has filed suit against 2nd District Commissioner, Julia Hurley. The suit comes months after Johnson conducted and completed an investigation into Ms. Hurley's move from her elected district into a different district. The investigation found that Ms. Hurley had in fact moved out of her elected district back in May 2019 which would disqualify her from serving on commission.

Back in December, after completing his investigation, Johnson issued his findings and gave Hurley untill March 6th to move back to her elected district, resign her commission seat or face legal action. Apparently, Ms. Hurley chosen to go to court. Johnson has stated that he has given her ample time to remedy the situation.

The lawsuit cites numerous facts of Ms. Hurley's move and evidence that she never intended the move to be temporary. It also states that Ms. Hurley has received more than $16,000.00 in tax payer compensation since moving out of her elected district.

DA Johnson also states that he intends to seek a temporary injunction to prevent Ms. Hurley from participating in county commission meetings untill the case is heard.

The lawsuit and the injunction are both subject to the current shutdown of Tennessee courts. It is unknown at this time when either can be brought to the courts.
