County OKs EDA committee

Loudon County Commission established Monday a committee to examine the 2008 interlocal agreement with the Loudon County Economic Development Agency.

Kelly Littleton-Brewster, commissioner, motioned for the committee to be put in place by Loudon County Mayor Rollen “Buddy” Bradshaw with a start and end date to be determined. Commissioner Van Shaver seconded the motion.

Commissioners approved the measure 7-1, with the lone opposition from Commissioner Harold Duff. Commissioners Julia Hurley and Matthew Tinker were absent.

The committee is charged with reviewing and updating the agreement.

“I don’t have a problem with reviewing the interlocal agreement that dates back to 2008, and now it’s 11 years later if I do the math,” Henry Cullen, commission chairman, said. “I think it needs to be updated. I think there needs to be some reporting back to Lenoir City, Loudon city and Loudon County.”

Cullen said all entities need to be involved.

“The mayor and I are going to talk about it and as of right now I think it’s going to be discussion between he and I and then we’re going to decide,” Littleton-Brewster said of the committee’s formation. “I personally would like to go ... to both cities.”
Littleton-Brewster said Monday’s approval was a step toward cleaning up what she believes is a dated agreement.

Duff, who has served on the EDA board for several years, said the agreement in place is “pretty darn good.” “I think if you would visit, more of you would visit the meetings they have, you could see exactly what is going on at these meetings,” Duff said. “Because being a member and knowing it from the inside I can’t support this.”
