Cleveland man drives drunk
with a gun
A
Cleveland man was arrested Friday after getting being pulled
over for drunk driving.
Lenoir
City Police Officer Riley Miller was patrolling U.S. Highway
321 near Interstate 40 when he saw a white Toyota minivan
speed past at 79 mph in a 55 mph zone. Miller stopped David
Clark Barkley, 30, the driver of the van, near White Wing
Road.
According to a report from Miller, he noticed a handgun
under Barkley’s feet. Miller told Barkley not to reach for
the gun, but Barkley moved toward the gun anyway. He then
had Barkley step out of the van.
Once out of the van,
Miller noticed Barkley was lethargic and had slurred speech.
Barkley admitted to having two “bootlegger” drinks and
taking one Xanax, which he claimed a physician had
prescribed, according to a report.
Barkley’s
condition worsened as Miller spoke with him. He failed
all field sobriety tests. He also refused a blood draw
and admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day.
Barkley’s license
was previously revoked for a DUI in Sevier County. While
on the way to the jail, Barkley threatened and cursed
Miller and slammed his head on the cage of the police
cruiser.
He was charged
with possession of a handgun while under the influence,
driving under the influence and driving on a
revoked/suspended license and held on $6,000 bond.
Man
abandons car
A
Lenoir City man was arrested April 5 at his home after
leaving the scene of an accident.
Lenoir City Police Officer Riley Miller responded to a
call of a possible drunk driver on Bon Street. Dispatch
advised Miller that a white car with “colorful paint
spots” was driving in the alley between Bon Street and
Bell Avenue when a witness saw the car run into a
utility pole and chain link fence, Miller wrote in a
report.
Miller found the vehicle backed into a driveway, but a
witness told Miller the man got out of the car and ran
down the alley. The registration of the vehicle belonged
to Billy Wayne Malone, 30.
Miller went to Malone’s house on Bon Street nearby.
Malone admitted wrecking the car.
He
told Miller he did not know how to drive the car and the
steering wheel was broken. Miller also learned Malone’s
license was previously revoked for a DUI.
Malone was charged with leaving the scene of accident
with property damage, immediate notice of accident and
driving on a revoked/suspended license and released on
$5,000 bond.
